Submission title: Wind Pattern Signals Video Screenshots
Submitted by: Barbara Lattanzi Participant’s field of work/interest: Coding Video Artist Participant’s Image Description: “For this video, "Wind Pattern Signals Video", I arranged very basic analog system patches (interconnections among audio/video synthesizers). Then I video-recorded real-time voltage manipulations of this configuration; and I separately gathered data on a windy day and remixed these wind-intensity measurements with the analog audio/video recordings using my own custom software. There is visualized/sonified electrical flow plus wind data to "glitch" these flows, plus video switching in the final remix.” http://www.wildernesspuppets.net/wp/video2014a.php Translated and woven by Sophia Borowska. |

Translation to Weaving
Lattanzi’s remixing
of analog parts with digital software is reflected in the use of software to program
an essentially analog loom. Three screenshots from the video were woven in order to represent
a range of the possibilities of Lattanzi’s software in the video.

Technique and Process Notes
To capture the
frenetic energy, movement, and glitch quality of the screenshots, I used a
series of shaded twills, which have a more diagonal movement across the
textile. The black weft is used in the background and in the areas in which the
grey appears to overlay the background.
A grey weft in different shades was used for most of the pattern. Three
screenshots were woven at the same dimensions, the same number of greys, and
the same weave structures.
-Sophia Threads Used: Warp is white 2/16 mercerized cotton. Wefts are black and grey 2/8 mercerized pearl cotton. |
Screenshot 3: woven detail (front) - see more below.
Outcome Notes
Screenshot 3 was woven by a
different person, and is thus tighter and more compacted than the other two.
The sheen of the mercerized cotton added a nice screen-like reflectivity, and
the texture/depths created by using two wefts give the cloth itself a sight
wave, reflecting an analog/physical version of Lattanzi’s visuals.
