Submission title: MontrealVPCollage
Submitted by: Tereza Tacic Participant’s field of work/interest: Interdisciplinary Artist Participant’s Image Description: "This image is a digital collage of glitched and digitally manipulated photographs of Montreal, reconstructed as a new cityscape. It is an architectural and spatial representation of the online digital communities that connect us. Each community (such as facebook, tumblr, etc.) is meticulously designed to fit an individual’s needs, yet is never quite able to accommodate fully. In order to complete one whole digital identity, users compile layers upon layers of various Internet platforms. This parallels the ways that “real life” identity is formed through neighbourhoods and architectural surroundings. Through distortion and flattening of space, tacic blurs the lines between physical/spatial and online/ephemeral communities." Translated and woven by Sophia Borowska. |

Translation to Weaving
This was a complex image with many colours
and different textures, such as smooth shaded areas versus noisy blocks. In
order to capture Tacic’s ideas, I conceived of the piece as a double-weave,
with pockets and areas where the two layers fuse together. This represents the
idea of communities (contained within the space of the pockets) and identity
(merging of different layers).

Technique and Process Notes
The colourful, glitchy areas of the image were made up of smaller buildings in local neighbourhoods, and so these became double-weave. The slick glass tower blocks were translated in shades of satin using both wefts for a smooth effect.

Outcome Notes
In weaving, the image got much more abstracted than expected, probably due to the reduction of colours. However, the textural variety and built-in spaces offer a different take on Tacic’s ideas.
